January 2020 Print

President's Message

It’s a new year, a new decade and your board has been hard at work making all kinds of magic happen behind the scenes. There are plenty of details throughout this month’s newsletter about upcoming programs and activities. I highly recommend you keep reading to find out what is in store.

Something coming up quickly that I am very excited about is the chapter’s strategic planning session. It is a piece of my overarching ducks in a row theme/goal for the 2019-2020 year. This is a grassroots effort to develop the objectives the chapter will focus on achieving over the next few years. These objectives will guide future programming/planning. There is still plenty of room for you to volunteer for this one-day retreat on Friday, January 17. Facilitated by Barbi Stiles, CPSM, FSMPS, we will chart the course for the chapter. There is a very short two question survey open for members. It will take approximately five minutes to complete. One question is open-ended and the other is a quick list that asks you to check off a few choices. Both questions are meant to be immediately reactive aka “go with your gut.” Even if you can’t participate in the actual strategic planning session, make sure you engage by completing the survey. Your opinion matters and counts!

On March 3, SMPS Tampa Bay is holding its very first book club geared for members with 12+ years of experience. You may have heard rumors; you may have participated in the one question survey I sent out in October/November or you may not have any idea what I am talking about. Wherever you land, make sure you register and pick up your copy of The Leadership Mindset by Joe Calloway. CPSMs earn two continuing education units for participating. There will be beverages and munchies too. And if you come up with a creative title for the book club let me know. I’m just not feeling its current title (that I came up with).

I am going to let you in on a little secret…there is plenty of room for you at the proverbial volunteer table. The directors and executive team have opportunities available that fit every type of schedule. Max out your membership benefits by volunteering…all the cool kids are doing it!

I would like to take a minute to thank our 2020 annual chapter sponsors: George F. Young (Gold-2020) and APG (Silver-2020/2021). We love our annual sponsors! You’ll hear more about them throughout the year. Make sure you say hi to the members from our sponsoring firms when you are out and about.

Finally, my door is always open. Well not really, I don’t have a door, but I digress (see I warned you I would do that often). What I really meant to say is hit me up, I’d love to chat about how I can help you get the most from your SMPS membership.

SMPS Webinars... Now From Your Desk

Let’s face it: you want to catch an SMPS Webinar you’ve heard so much about but you just can’t leave your desk for two and a half hours in the middle of the afternoon, drive halfway across town (perhaps) and sit disconnected from your laptop through it all – you just don’t have that kind of luxury. Thankfully, now you don’t have to leave the comfort of your desk to join the webinar and get those much needed CEU credits. In general, the webinars are a key part of our chapter’s education kit and many members find them beneficial, so recognizing the need and wanting to offer the most benefit to our members, SMPS Tampa Bay is now offering remote viewing of the webinars. As you can imagine, there are a couple of extra steps that come with sharing the webinar through web conferencing software, which led to some other changes, primarily registration closes the night prior to the webinar – so don’t leave registering for the last hour!

To recap: webinars can now be watched from your desk (or the bar, the beach, or anywhere), you should register by midnight the day before the webinar and then look for an e-mail with the access information. If you enjoyed leaving your office for a few hours to catch the webinar, don’t worry, that’s not going away – we are still going to provide that option (unless a webinar is clearly marked as REMOTE VIEWING ONLY). It is our hope that these expanded options make it easier for all of our members and also non-members to benefit from the great continuing education content provided by SMPS.

It's time to be aware, prepared, and ready to control the unexpected. During our January webinar, our presenter will focus on brand perception research as a stop gap for mistakes that haunt and transitions that linger. We’ll also learn about smart, strategic approaches to planning ahead for the unexpected. By investigating brand perceptions from circles of influence (COI), such as referral sources or project partners as well as from clients and employees, you can work to head off issues that impact referrals and client retention
