A Message from the President

"If I waited until I had all my ducks in a row, I'd never get across the street. Sometimes you just have to gather up what you've got and make a run for it." - Judge Lynn Toler

It’s August and my very last president’s message. It has been a rollercoaster of a year. To think this time last year, who would have guessed what was in store for the chapter, the world, and for each of us individually? I started off the year with the plan of working on getting “our ducks in a row” for chapter management, thinking to lay the foundation for upcoming years. We achieved many milestones, big and small, even when our daily lives drastically changed on all levels in March.

One very important achievement central to the ducks in a row plan was the strategic planning session held in January. Several long-term and new members came together for a day of brainstorming. We took a hard look at what makes our chapter a benefit to our members and the local industry. We also did some soul searching to identify chapter weaknesses. It was an energizing day resulting in three objectives with accompanying goals for the chapter to focus on over the next several years:

  • Objective A: SMPS Tampa Bay is the industry recognized marketing leadership organization.
    • Show firm leadership and seller-doers the value of the organization
    • Offer solid, signature client-facing events
    • Establish relationships with other professional organizations
  • Objective B: Become the go-to organization for A/E/C marketing/business development education and professional development.
    • Create comprehensive education programs (beginner, mid-level, senior)
    • Create mentorship program
    • Re-invigorate CPSM program
  • Objective C: Have strong, diverse, and sustained membership engagement and growth.
    • Increase member engagement
    • Succession planning for board and committee chairs

As a chapter, we hit a new record with over 100 members this year. We also held some fantastic client-facing and networking events. Last fall, the chapter introduced a remote-viewing option for HQ-hosted monthly webinars. At a greatly reduced rate, chapter members could partake in the webinars from the convenience of their desk (who knew that would be so necessary a few months later!). We even pivoted to offer virtual networking opportunities for members.

This year could not have been accomplished without the members who volunteered their time, ideas, talent, and passion to the chapter. I am truly grateful for their support and each one has my heartfelt thank you for everything they did.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to lead the chapter this year. It was an amazing experience I will never forget. I look forward to seeing what’s next for SMPS Tampa Bay.

Thank you,
Jenni Nix-McGerald, CPSM
2019-2020 SMPS Tampa Bay President
